THE
TITLE OF THE LDS CHURCH
The LDS claims that their title, "The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints," proves that they are the true church of
Jesus Christ. However, this claim is invalidated by the fact that
they've previously used at least five other titles (History of the
Church, Documentary, 1960, Vol. III, page 24).
In 1830, when the Church first came into being, their official title
was, "The Church of Christ" (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1.)
However, in 1834 the leaders and members of the Church, by
unanimous vote, elected to remove the name of Christ completely from
their official title. They changed it to "The Church of The
Latter Day Saints" (History of the Church, volume 2, page 63.)
So according to their way of reasoning, this would mean that at that
stage they weren't His true church.
As a matter of interest, there are many Christian churches whose title
also includes the name of Jesus Christ. In the eyes of the LDS this
must mean then that they too are the true churches of Jesus Christ.
In the real world it is a church's relationship with the biblical Lord
Jesus Christ, their reliance on Him alone for salvation, and the fact
that they preach the same gospel as did Christ's apostles, that proves
whether or not they are genuine Christians.
